Dental Toxins Plus Low Vitamin C Equals Trouble! (Part 2)

In the prior post, Dr. Thomas E. Levy discussed  his opinion that  people with low vitamin C levels may experience health problems after some common dental procedures.

In this post, we’ll look at obtaining vitamin C from food sources and the intake of additional vitamin C through supplementation.  The goal being for you to develop a plan that’s right for you and your health objectives.

Have You Had Your Fruits and Vegetables Today?

According to the website The World’s Healthiest Foods, there are a variety of fruits and vegetables containing significant amounts of vitamin C.  Here’s a few of top fruits and vegetables featuring this important vitamin:

  • Bell Peppers;
  • Broccoli;
  • Lemons and Limes;
  • Strawberries;
  • Mustard Greens;
  • Papaya; and
  • Kale.

Their article regarding food sources of vitamin C, also has a “Nutrient Rating Chart” with information for various nutrient values for many of your favorite fruits and vegetables.  I’ll provide a link later in this post.

There’s general agreement among health experts, that it’s impossible to obtain a toxic effect from eating these natural sources of vitamin C.

However, the major issue is that the vast majority of Americans don’t come close to eating the minimum recommended 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day.  Survey after survey has borne out this tragic fact.

So, when I hear a health expert say all you need to do is eat a “balanced diet”, I shake my head in disbelief.  The sad fact is most Americans don’t even come close to this minimum intake.

What’s The Role of Vitamin C Supplements?

The National Academy of Sciences established Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA) for the many vitamins and minerals required for your body to properly function.  The current RDA for vitamin C are:

  • Females 19 years of age and older:  75mg daily;
  • Males 19 years of age and older:   90mg daily; and
  • A Tolerable Upper Intake Level for all Adults 19+ of:  2000mg daily.

Sounds simple enough doesn’t it?  The problem is that these RDA amounts were established in 1943 and haven’t been updated in many years.  How do figure out the right amount of daily vitamin C intake for you?

In the following video, Dr Levy discusses his experiences with patients receiving larger doses of vitamin C, both before and after dental procedures.  This video is provided courtesy of ihealthtube.com:

Health VideosSupplementation Fights Disease

An important consideration of Dr. Levy’s opinion, is that he’s in favor of mega-doses of vitamin C.  For example, he advocates a daily dosage of 6 grams, which far exceeds the daily needs of health adults.  Remember the UL intake of 2000 mg mentioned earlier?  His higher amount may be acceptable for some people, with specific medical conditions under a doctor’s care.  However, don’t exceed the UL unless your doctor approves it.

My current daily intake of vitamin C is approximately 70 – 110 mg from food sources, and 180 mg from a multivitamin.

For more information on food sources of vitamin C, check this link to WH Foods.com.  Additional information on vitamin C supplements can be found at this link to the Linus Pauling Institute.

The Bottom Line:  It’s very easy to assume a glass of orange juice or consuming foods fortified with vitamin C, are enough to meet your daily requirement.  But are you sure?  Take a look at the sources I’ve provided you.  Talk it over with your doctor or other health professional.  Then develop your course of action.

Dental Toxins Plus Low Vitamin C Equals Trouble! (Part 1)

Could something as common as a tooth extraction or root canal lead to a heart attack?  Dr. Thomas E. Levy believes the answer is YES!

Dr. Levy is the author of 6 books on Health issues, based on his experiences while practicing cardiology and intensive research.  For the last 10 years, his has advocated the importance of maintaining proper levels of antioxidants in your body at all times.

Vitamin C is one such antioxidant.  It’s usefulness for your health and wellness has previously been discussed in this blog.

Since the human body does not naturally produce vitamin C, it must be obtained from eating fruits and vegetables or through supplementation.  The ultimate value of vitamin C is its role in the production of collagen, which helps to strengthen your body’s connective tissue.

According to Dr. Levy, vitamin C deficiency leads to focal (local) toxic effects on various tissues in your body.  For example, a low vitamin C level in your eye lens increases the risk of cataracts.  A similar result can be seen as a cause of periodontal (gum) disease.

Dr. Levy’s review of the research, indicates people with periodontal disease have a greater risk of heart disease.  This is because dental procedures, such as root canals and tooth extractions, cause the release of previously trapped bacteria into your blood stream.

Without sufficient levels of vitamin C in your body to fight these bacteria, you have an increased risk of blockages in your heart arteries.  Blockages are a major cause of heart attacks.

This information is not intended to discourage you from receiving necessary dental procedures.  It’s intended to increase your awareness that dental procedures, such as root canals and extractions, are a significant source of inflammation and toxins in your body.

The Bottom Line:  Preparation is the key to success in anything.  The time to seek health and wellness is before you get sick, not after.  It’s important to gain good, reliable information from respected sources.  Review the information against your current situation, to find areas for improvement.  Discuss your questions and concerns with your doctor or a natural health practitioner, to come up with a plan of action.  It doesn’t have to be complicated, but it must be practical.

In the second part of this post, we’ll look at the current Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for vitamin C and the opinions of  health practitioners regarding higher intake levels.  Also, we’ll review natural sources of vitamin C, which you should consider for your health and wellness regimen.  See you then!

What Happened To The Blueberries?

When you see a food product clearly labeled as containing blueberries, it would be reasonable for you to assume that to be a true statement.  Well, I have some bad news for you…some food companies are deceiving you!

Mike Adams, AKA “The Health Ranger”, has done a fantastic report on food products claiming to have blueberries as an ingredient, when in fact they fail to have this great antioxidant.

Instead, artificial petrochemical-based food colors are being used to give the food products the appearance of having “blueberries”,when in fact this isn’t true.

Check out this wonderful video, courtesy of NaturalNews.TV and Food Investigations.com.  It’s a real eye opener on deceptive food labeling practices.  The information will help you avoid being duped into buying a food product that’s not be beneficial for you and your health.

Why can’t some food companies just be honest about their products?  Because your money is more important to them.  Your health and well-being are secondary.

The Bottom Line:  It never fails to amaze me how some food companies will go to such lengths to fool you.  When you’re trying to eat “healthier”, the last thing you need is to be deceived about the quality of a food product.

Protect yourself by reading the ingredient labels.  If you see food colors such as Blue No. 1, Blue No. 3,  Red No. 40 and Green No.3, usually found at the bottom of the label,  DON’T buy that product.  You deserve better.

Is Inflammation A Threat To Your Health? (Part 1)

Could failing to floss your teeth on a regular basis damage your overall health?  The surprising answer is YES!  By not flossing, bacteria accumulates leading to inflammation in your gums, and possibly something worse.

Inflammation is your body’s response to perceived threats like infection or injury.  The white blood cells form an army to defeat foreign substances such as bacteria, viruses, and infections.  While this is a good thing, continuous exposure to these threats can lead your body to a state of chronic inflammation, which in turn leads to a number of serious illnesses.

Medical experts have found chronic inflammation to be an underlying cause of diseases such as:

  • Parkinson’s disease;
  • Heart disease;
  • Arthritis; and
  • Cancer.

Dr. Michael Roizen, Chairman of the Wellness Institute of the Cleveland Clinic, gives his take on the causes of inflammation in the following video:

Health VideosDr. Roizen Explains Inflammation’s Causes and Natural Treatments

In the next post, you’ll find some natural ways to keep your body’s inflammation response in balance.  Your diet plays an extremely important role in controlling inflammation.  So, be ready to find out suggestions to help you tame this beast.  See ya next time!

How Can Glutathione Save Your Life?

If I told you that the best antioxidant is already inside your body, you’d probably call me crazy.  However, there a molecule produced in your body which is a part of every cell you have.  It’s name is Glutathione (gloota-thigh-own), and many experts consider it essential to preventing many chronic, degenerative diseases.

Your body naturally produces glutathione, but optimal levels are depleted by stress, inadequate diet, and environmental toxins.  Without this important guardian, your immune system begins to be overwhelmed from oxidative stress and free radicals.

According to Dr. Mark Hyman, author of Ultrametabolism and several other books, lower levels of glutathione means that your body is unable to recycle other antioxidants in sufficient amounts to ward off chronic illnesses, such as cancer and heart disease.  In short, you’re ability to remain healthy becomes compromised.

Dr Stephen Langer, explains how glutathione works in this short video, courtesy of ihealthtube.com:

Health VideosGlutathione Goes Beyond Other Antioxidants

It seems complicated, but just think of glutathione as attracting the bad stuff in your body, like toxins and free radicals, and recycling the good.  In this case the good stuff, consists of vitamin C, vitamin E and other antioxidants.

A good primer on Glutathione, written by Dr. Mark Hyman, can be found at this link to Huffingtonpost.com.  I suggest you read it today.

The Bottom Line:  I’m looking at additional research, to see how to properly add a glutathione supplement to my health regime.  After all, I only have this life, so I’ll take all the help I can find to stay healthy.  Glutathione is not a silver bullet, in and of itself.  However, combined with other good health practices, it appears to be another tool for my overall wellness.

Are you going to take a good look at glutathione?
