Do You Make These Mistakes with Food?

There’s a saying to the effect that, “it’s the little things that matter”.  When it comes to your daily diet, there are some foods that actually hinder your efforts to eat healthier.  Yes, those pesky “little things” which fly right under your nose, only pretending to be healthy for you.

I found a great slide show called “Food Frauds”, at WebMD.com.  Leslie Bonci, a nutritionist with the University of Pittsburgh, provides a telling look at foods appearing to be “healthy” choices, but actually hamper your efforts to eat a balanced diet.  These food choices are loaded with calories, sugar, and extra grams of fat.  I suggest you check this slide show at WebMD now, not later.  Who says Fresh Smoothies aren’t sneaky?

The bottom line:  there are alternative food choices for eating healthier.  However, how can you make a good decision unless you know the good from the bad?

Who Else Wants Coffee?

Men, go to your nearest coffee shop right now!  Don’t let anyone or anything stop you.  Your life may depend on how much coffee you drink everyday!

A recent heath study, conducted by researchers at Harvard’s School of Public Health, indicates a link between coffee consumption in men and a  lower risk of developing prostate cancer.  Nearly 48,000 U.S. men participated in the study from 1986 – 2008.

Researchers found the following associations from the study:

  • Men who drank 6 cups  of coffee or more, had a 60% lower risk in developing prostate cancer;
  • These same men had a 20% lower risk of developing any form of cancer;
  • Men who drank 3 cups of coffee or less, showed a 30% lower risk of prostate cancer;
  • Whether the coffee was decaffeinated or regular, the results were the same.

The study results are worthy of attention because among U.S. men, prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed form of cancer.  Also, prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death among U.S. men.

Check out a summary of the Harvard study at msnbc.com.  Also, see  the additional benefits of  this wonderful beverage in the article “Coffee the Good News“, at Harvard’s public health site.

Now that’s something to drink to!

The Last Diet You Will Ever Need!

There’s a ton of free information regarding weight loss at the Mayo Clinic.com site.  You should start with the section concerning the Mayo Clinic Diet.  There you’ll get an overview of the clinic’s philosophy regarding diet and weight loss.  Don’t expect to see any miraculous success stories or sales talk.  Also, there’s no new, ground breaking weight loss product.  However, you’ll  find solid, practical advice on achieving weight loss.

If flipping through the various web site pages aren’t your cup of tea,  all the information can also be found in the Mayo Clinic Diet book.  Also, there’s a companion diet journal to help guide your progress.

Basically, the book offers the diet in 2 phases.  The initial “lose it” phase, has a goal of 10 pounds in the first 2 weeks.   The second “live it” phase, takes a long-term approach to weight management, once you’ve reached your weight loss goal.

However, if you’re looking for a lot of recipes in this book, you’ll likely to be somewhat disappointed.  This book is primarily a guideline for achieving weight loss through healthy eating, instead of a cookbook.

Overall, the Mayo Clinic Diet offers a reasonable approach to weight loss, without any exotic fluff.  It should provide results, if you’re willing try your best.  It gives you the tools for weight loss, with the knowledge to fine tune  them for your personal situation.  Check it out, in the books section of the Boomer Wellness-Tips store today!

The Lazy Way To Lose Weight! (Part 2)

It seems nearly all diet pills claim superiority at helping you lose weight.  Yet, each brand also claims to work differently, in helping you achieve your weight loss goal.  Let’s look at how diet pills work.

The majority of diet pills claim to work in one of four ways.  Most diet pills work as:

  • Appetite Suppressants;
  • Fat Burners;
  • Fat Blockers; or
  • Carbohydrate Blockers.

Appetite suppressants affect your central nervous system, making you feel less hungry.  Basically, these pills disrupt your body’s metabolism.  Doctors prescribe appetite suppressants as a treatment for obesity, usually for a short period of 12 weeks or less.  These pills tend to lose their effectiveness after a couple of weeks.

Fat burners work on the stored fat in your body.  They work on the theory of breaking down and metabolizing the energy stored in your body’s fat, as well as the fat in the food you eat.  Both actions are thought to help you lose weight and keep it off.

Fat blockers operate by binding to the fatty acids in the food you eat.  This action supposedly helps dietary fat pass through your digestive system,  helping you to lose weight.  Fat blockers often claim you can eat whatever you desire, and still lose the extra pounds.  The primary danger with fat blockers is that they also hamper proper absorption of fat-soluble vitamins by your digestive system.  Thus, important vitamins such as A,D,E, and K are hindered from performing their functions in your body.  Also, absorption of  beta-carotene is affected as well.

Carbohydrate blockers prevent starchy foods such as bread, pasta, and potatoes, from absorbing in your digestive system.   The carbohydrates just pass through your digestive tract, and are eliminated through your bodily waste.

So, each of the primary methods by which diet pills work, have pros and cons in their usage.  Also, diet pills may have adverse interactions with prescription medications you are taking.  These concerns make it important for you to consult your doctor before taking any diet pills.  Your total health status must be considered before using any of these products.

I found the major issue with diet pills of any type, is that they are short-term solutions to obesity problems.  Most of these pills should only be used for 6 months or less, according to their makers.  Additionally, most brands fail to tell you that diet modification and exercise, are still necessary for you to effectively lose weight.

One of the better articles I’ve seen on the effectiveness and safety of diet pills, can be found at the MayoClinic.com site.  I suggest you read this article as part of you homework, before taking any diet pills.

My next post will cover a great, total approach to losing weight.  It’s a must read item!  See ya then.
